Like many bassists, Matt Senjem started on trombone in the fifth grade. He enjoyed the trombone and played in the jazz band for a couple years, but then picked up an electric bass in 9th grade and put down the trombone for awhile, playing with friends in rock bands for the next few years. Originally hailing from Rochester, MN, he moved to Minneapolis in 1995 to pursue an education at the University of MN. While at the U of MN, he performed in an all original instrumental group named Nepenthe, and studied jazz performance and theory under the direction of Gary Raynor, Phil Hey, and Ron McCurdy, and studied double bass technique with Tom Pieper. Matt remained active in the U of M big band and jazz combos up until his graduation in 1999, with a major in mathematics. Since the turn of the century, Matt has played bass with many Twin Cities bands and musicians including many of the local Hot Club groups such as Twin Cities Hot Club, Parisota Hot Club, the Upper Mississippi River Hot Club, Mill City Hot Club, Papa john and the Hot Club of East Lake Street; jazz vocalists such as Connie Evingson, Nichola Miller, Maud Hixson, Charmin Michelle, Aaron Keith Stewart, Lee Engele, the Phil Mattson Singers; combos and big bands such as Vic Volare and the Volare Lounge Orchestra, the Wolverines Jazz Orchestra, the Bellagala Big Band, modern jazz groups such as East Side, Robb Henry Trio, and indie bands such as Dark Dark Dark, Guitarzan vs. Bazzilla featuring Drumasaurus Rex. Matthad the honor of playing with Dorado Schmitt for a Minneapolis concert on his 2005 tour. Matt has played bass on numerous studio recordings, as well as local radio and television shows, supporting various musical endeavors over the years. In addition to playing the bass with many local groups, Mattalso enjoys playing the trombone with the Midway-Frogtown Arborators Band.
